What is a free NHS Health Check?

The Buckinghamshire NHS Health Checks are free health check- ups that act as a midlife MOT. The checks are part of a national programme and are designed to spot the early signs of health problems.

These checks are completely free and open to Buckinghamshire residents aged 40 – 74 years. They are offered in a wide range of locations across Buckinghamshire including GP practices, pharmacies, community venues and workplaces.

Why have an NHS Health Check?

Over the age of 40 our risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and dementia increases. The good news is that these conditions can often be prevented. By having your Health Check now we can help you prevent health problems before they develop and cause long lasting damage helping you to live a long, active and independent life.

What will happen at my free NHS Health Check?

The health professional will ask you some simple questions relating to family history and lifestyle and carry out a number of tests including a blood tests. We aim to detect any potential problems early before they do any damage.

The full screening takes 20 to 30 minutes and assesses risk of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, kidney disease and dementia.

You will receive personalised advice relating to your results and you may be referred to your GP or local lifestyle services to help with any lifestyle changes.
